by Prof. Kosta Y. Mumcuoglu

Medicinal leeches have been used since 1960’s for the salvage of tissue with venous congestion. Today, especially in the field of reconstructive microsurgery, medicinal leech therapy is enjoying a renaissance. In 2004, the FDA approved leeches as a medical device in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
